SOCIETY OF THE HELPERS OF MARY
ASHA NIKETAN
Jalpaiguri is a beautiful place surrounded by panoramic tea estates. The uniqueness of this land lies in the unity of the people amidst diversity of faith and culture. The people here live harmoniously respecting each other. At the same time there is the reality of poverty that is vividly seen in the lives of the labourers who despite hard work earn meagre wages.

Bishop James Toppo, impressed by the work being done at Premankur, Madarihat, invited SHM to work in his diocese. The objective was to empower the poor through education, and to strengthen their faith through catechism.

In 2008 a convent cum children’s home was built. The children come from poor families in remote villages and are sheltered and educated in the boarding. At the request of the local people, the centre initiated vocational training programs for youth and women, and tuition classes for school going children. Social initiatives are conducted for the tea garden workers.
