SHM had been called to attend to the needs of the aged and assist in pastoral ministry at Cheriyapozhy parish by the Bishop of Alleppey, Stephen Athipozhiyil. Initially the sisters took up residence in a rented place but thanks to the generosity of Mrs Ponnamma Kandanat, who donated her land for the needs of the people, Maria Bhavan was built.

In addition to managing the home for the aged, the sisters conduct family visitation, children and youth groups, home-based education support for children, relief work, and livelihood projects for destitute women.
