SOCIETY OF THE HELPERS OF MARY
KRIPA NILAYA
In 2006 Fr Ambrose SJ invited SHM to serve in Sedam. The centre was set up on 29 July 2007 in collaboration with the social centre of the diocese, coordinating the Vidya Vikas School project in 13 government schools in Sedam Taluka and the women’s empowerment project through self-help groups. They also reached out to families living in two substations, Kurkunta and Malkhed, 25km away.

The sisters began a nursery and playschool in June 2013 and the girls’ hostel from 2014. In 2014 sisters took up a diocesan project, Seva Sangam. The focus is to promote awareness among parents and communities on disabilities and the right to education of such persons, and to initiate need-based programs for them.

Another project, Jan Jagruti Munch, is being carried out in two panchayats. This project is for all groups, from children to senior citizens. To facilitate implementation, women’s self-help groups, children’s groups, kishori farmers and senior citizens’ groups have been formed in the villages. This has helped the people to obtain old age pension, widows’ pension, delivery charges, funeral charges, bus pass for senior citizens, etc. Further, poor women are helped through livelihood programs.
