SOCIETY OF THE HELPERS OF MARY
DAYA SADAN
In 1962 Fr Frank Lobo invited the sisters to Dharavi to minister to the Kolis (fisher folk) and Tamilians living there.

The sisters lived first in a tiny room, right in the slum. There, they gathered women for evening classes and children for regular studies. They also opened a dispensary to care for the sick, and in 1969 a maternity ward was added.

In the course of time two sub-centres were opened, in Dhorwada and Kalakilla. In Dhorwada the sisters conducted classes for children, sewing classes for women, organized women’s groups, etc. At Kalakilla they initiated a weaving enterprise for physically challenged persons, besides coaching classes for poor students.
In 2000 the Daya Sadan Social Centre was inaugurated and registered under the Trust Act. The activities include skills training, health camps and aid, education sponsorship, empowerment of women, children and transgenders, food distribution to vulnerable groups, working towards the elimination of tuberculosis, etc.
