The Helpers of Mary came to Nirmal in 1960, at the invitation of Fr. Victoria; initially the sisters were visiting the families, travelling daily from Andheri and back. Later on they were living at the place and activities carried out from there. The people were mostly simple famers and fisher folks. Poverty and illiteracy were the main obstacles and they had no one to take care of their social and moral well-being. The sisters conducted night class for adults, Nursery and coaching classes for children. They distributed food grains among the poor people and started mid-day meal program for the pre-school children.

A piece of land was donated and a small Hospital was built in 1975, to meet the medical needs of the people. This Hospital had a few beds and an operation theatre. It was very successful until 1981 as there were no other dispensaries, Hospital, nursing homes nearby. Gradually many other dispensaries sprang up and the Hospital therefore had to be partly closed. The Hospital is being used for the boarding of the girls and dispensary was carried on for some years. There has been a steady progress in the living conditions and education of the people.
