SOCIETY OF THE HELPERS OF MARY
ST. MARY'S CENTRE
In 1987 Fr K Joseph, MSFS, invited SHM to work in Nanded, Maharashtra. It was to be on an experimental basis for two years. During that time the sisters explored Mudked, 25km from Nanded, and felt this place was more suitable. The railway station master of Mudked gave them a tin-shed where they began their work of adult education, managing a dispensary and tailoring classes. Later the sisters took a rented house at Kinwat, a tribal region. On 3 March 1990 St Mary’s Centre was inaugurated.
To empower the people the sisters organise various programs— self-help groups for women, education for children, medical aid and income generation projects for the community, etc. Through the feeding program, nutritious mid-day meals are supplied to the elderly, the sick and other vulnerable people in the villages daily.
