SOCIETY OF THE HELPERS OF MARY
SURVANA SADAN
Fr Lazarus Sequeira was finding it difficult to manage the areas at Amboli, Oshiwara and Jogeshwari. He approached Fr Jean Mercier and through his intervention got in touch with Mother Anna Huberta who sent the Marys to render services to the poor and needy at Jogeshwari.

Suvarna Sadan community started on 26 January 1971. For the first few years the sisters travelled daily from Andheri but as their work increased, they took up residence in Jogeshwari in 1975.

Over the years the sisters have heeded the cries of orphans, poor families, widows, elderly and destitute living in the area. They initiated women’s groups, self-help groups and skills training; educational support to poor students and balwadis; formed support groups for domestic workers and, in recent years, for transgenders.

In 1997 the centre began focusing on community development, legal aid and counselling, and holistic family care.
